How can medical cannabis help with…MALIGNANT BRAIN TUMOR?

Definition of malignant brain tumor

Malignant brain tumor is a cancerous tumor. The tumor starts in the brain and spreads to surrounding tissues. It is always found unexpectedly and turns the life upside down. After hearing the diagnosis people never evaluate their lives the same way they did before. Nobody knows for sure what causes brain tumors, but one should consult a doctor when suffering from continued severe migraines. Sometimes it is found by accident during CAT scan or an MMR of the patient’s head. Malignant tumor develops very fats. There are 4 stages of tumor malignancy: stages 1 or 2 suggest recovery after chemotherapy or radiation, and a patient can return to his/her normal live. More dangerous is stage 3, it is hard to tell what consequences it may have. Stage 4, unfortunately, leaves little hope for recovery or none at all.

How can medical marijuana help?

The most common treatments of malignant brain tumor are: surgery, radiation therapy (radiotherapy) and chemotherapy. No need to say about side effects of such treatments, because any interference to the brain is a big stress itself, not mentioning feelings of a patient about all this. Surgery is used to remove the tumor, radiotherapy kills fast dividing cells using radiation in the area exposed to radiation beams; chemotherapy kills fast dividing cells in the whole body with the help of chemical substances. Along with cancer cells, radio- and chemotherapy kill rapidly growing normal cells. Needless to say, that all kinds of treatments mentioned above can cause severe side effects that may last for a long time or appear long time after the treatment is ended. Radiotherapy most common side effects are fatigue, headache, nausea and vomiting, lack of appetite, fertility problems. The most feared effect of radiotherapy is second cancer. Chemotherapy side effects list is way longer than that. There are numerous medical evidences that marijuana can help fight cancer and alleviate unbearable side effects. Besides an appetite stimulant, cannabis can be an antispasmodic and analgesic. In 1999 United States National Academy of Sciences and The Institute of medicine, based on their study of medical cannabis, recommended to use the benefits of cannabis to mitigate nausea, increase appetite, reduce pain and anxiety.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) assessed the potential risks and health benefits of marijuana and reported, that the cannabinoids in cannabis relieve pain, control vomiting and nausea, stimulate appetite. Marijuana (cannabis) contains 480 natural components, including 66 cannabinoids, chemicals that are found only in this plant. The best two studied are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). The latest study of TCH and CBD conducted by the University of London, proves that used together these two cannabinoids make cancer cells more receptive to radiation treatment, as a result it can stop cancer in aggressive form and even cure it. How it works? Our body produces cannabinoids for itself and has receptors to bind it. Thanks to it, patients with brain tumor can use medical marijuana to make radiotherapy or chemotherapy more effective, or to use it alone. Cannabis offers more effective ways to cure cancer with fewer side effects, stops tumor growth and alleviates seizure. It is up to a patient to choose any options from the following: fatigue and pain from traditional treatments or relaxation and no worries from marijuana; nausea and vomiting or “the munchies” that make you feel every flavor of food and enjoy it; depression and tension or “high” effect that make you think of pleasant things? Of course, it is not a cure-all drug, but if it brings psychological relief, lifts tension, makes you feel relaxed and wipes off worries, why not use it? Mind that dosage should be controlled to make treatment effective. Consult a doctor who believes in medical marijuana as an anti-cancer drug and start seeing more colors around.
